Over the last half-century, corduroy fabric has endured the test of time, reincarnating itself decade after decade! The fabric’s creation dates back to 200 BC in the Egyptian city of Al-Fustat where it was popular for centuries. It then gained popularity again during the Medieval period in Western Europe as a princely fabric fit for nobles and King’s alike. Today, many of us have a nostalgic feeling for the fabric, whether its Steve McQueen’s olive pinwale corduroy sports jacket, or Corduroy the Bear, the 1968 department store bear who needed a button and a friend, we are all familiar with the thick, ridged and cozy fabric.
What does corduroy mean in skiing? The perfectly coiffed furrows are called “corduroy” because the even pattern of snow left behind the machine groomer looks just like the fabric of the same name. A well-manicured groomed run turns a messy, skied out slope into a smooth, velvety, predictable surface that is sought after by some. For those that like to go fast and “zoom the groom” or “rip corduroy”, it has been said that a freshly laid out corduroy track can even rival a powder run!
